The logo of the International Hanseatic Days is a definite sign of new developments – it is a stylized shape of the plan of the 17th century fortress town – a seven-pointed star.

Perfect city of old, inspiring example of the universe and rediscovered ideals

In the past four hundred years, several different development strategies have been tried out in Pärnu, from moderately disabled monarchy to cannibalistic socialism and slavery-based capitalism. Unfortunately, only cosmic idealism has left behind a lasting and valuable mark and the organizers of the Hanseatic Days have decided to return to it.

According to the views of the Baroque Europe, the city of Pärnu was designed to be a perfect city; necessary facilities – administrative buildings, churches, the university, etc. – were located in orderly quarters on wide and straight streets, the market square was the heart of the city and Rüütli Street its axis. The universe was considered to be the epitome of divine order and perfection and thus, the city with the most modern planning system in the Baltic provinces of Sweden used titles borrowed from the vast space. Unlike in Tallinn, where new entrenchments were named after Swedish counties and cities, or in Narva, also extensively re-planned in modern times, where bastions were given allegorical names - Dignity, Glory, Fame, Victory, Fortune, Peace, Fate, Success -, the seven bastions of Pärnu were named after all seven celestial bodies known at the time - Venus, the Moon, Mercury, Jupiter, the Sun, Mars and Saturn. Thus, the centre of the universe of the fortress town is the EARTH. After some setbacks, Pärnu will continue to be a perfect city; as is the custom here.
